On our way to the island
We saw a familiarly named road sign in a foreign looking area. Portland's Cesar E Chavez is a Boulevard though which used to be 39th Avenue.
Like I mentioned before there was so much to see! Look at that cityscape and all those railroad tracks. Being a port city there are many, many, many kinds of boats and ships sharing the harbor. We finally crossed the bridge over to Coronado! I'd love to walk around the island and stop in the shops and have coffee at the little cafes. That will have to be on our list for the next time we are down there.
We found parking for both cars on the street right by the crosswalk approach to the beach.
Beach grasses and large rocks lined each side of the steps going down to the sand. If I didn't have a spiffy looking blue bike of my own, I'd like to get a yellow one like this. Isn't it great?! Harlan really needs to install a basket on mine. However, if he did that I'd probably want a small dog to go in it. :P
Henry broke out the sand toys
We settled in a nice little hollow between groups of people and had a large area for the kids to play in the sand.
Perfect sand play requires water too.
Kiel took the first trip into the surf to bring water back for the kids.
Anabelle took it upon herself to head out and get the next pail of water. I took the bucket from her and she wandered down toward the water. She loves!!! the ocean.
Grampa came along and helped her do some wading.
I love this picture of Cherise carrying the pail of water and Har carrying Bellie. I especially like the reflections in the wet sand and vividness of the colors.
Our official beach portrait
We hadn't planned to wear coordinating outfits or that they would go so nicely with the sky and water. It does make for a nice picture though. You can't tell where my hair ends and his begins with the breeze blowing :)
It was so much fun!
We could not have ordered better weather. A little breeze, high clouds, sunshine, warm sand and temperate water temps. We stayed long enough for Anabelle to eat her weight in sandy snacks and sips.
Bye bye beach... thanks for the lovely time.
Back to the cars and home for Birthday "cake"
Henry was looking forward to singing "Happy Birthday" to his mom since the moment he woke up. In lieu of a cake she opted for peach muffins with afternoon coffee.
This sweet boy was a Happy Henry when we finally sang and she blew out the candles.
Cherise and Kiel were then headed off to an evening and overnight away.
I don't know the last time they were out without the kids for that long.
My next installment of this continuing San Diego blog:
Grampa and Gramma alone with the Grands
