Rose Festival and other stuff

Rose Show
Each year they  melt the ice off of the Ice Chalet at Lloyd Center and put up tables for a rose show. People from all over the area bring in the best from their gardens and compete for lovely prizes. There are many categories from floral arranging to the best miniature roses and everything in between. My favorite display is the table of bountiful bouquets from the public rose gardens around town. They don't win prizes but they are so beautiful!
Cherise and I took time to pose in front of some beautiful blooming "Lloyd Center" roses.
Very sweet!

City Fair! Here we come!

It was quite a treat for Henry, Wyatt and Genevieve to ride Max down to the City Fair at Waterfront Park. It's been years since we went down there.
We got off at the Skidmore Fountain stop. We had to tell the kids that this fountain is okay for horses to drink from but not for humans.
Walking the waterfront

When we left the MAX platform we walked over and crossed Nato Parkway at the first light and followed the sidewalk toward City Fair. It turns out that the closest entrance was one light further on Nato.  We had to walk the full length of the fair to get to the only entrance on the waterfront side.  It wasn't too upsetting since it was such a glorious evening and the kiddos were all pretty excited to get inside.
We finally made it!

Big kids' rides
Cherise, Hayden, Cameron and Wyatt got in line for the ferris wheel. They rode in car #7.
They were up there somewhere.

The little kids and I watched from down below, while Cherise had her camera up there with them.  She got some pretty great shots. I stole this one of Hayden with "Big Pink" in the background.

Can you see me with the stroller? We're just a bit up and to the right of the center of this picture.
One more for the "Big kids"

Harlan and I rode something very similar to this way back in the early eighties in West Edmonton Mall. I thought it was fun so encouraged the boys and Reesie to have a go.
I think they enjoyed it as much as we did.
It was breezy and the flags were waving
It was nice to see a flag pole in the center of the Fair. Also cool to see several American flags on the rides themselves. I guess carnivals are a part of the fabric of Americana.
Kiddie rides

Wyatt, Genevieve and Henry each got to ride on three rides. This fighter plane one was pretty cool. Genevieve was the tail gunner for Henry's plane.  Wyatt was able to reach back and shoot as well as fly.

From the air to the water. This wasn't the most exciting ride in the park but it's so cute to see these guys going around on the water. Wyatt of course had to be goofy and floated almost the whole way laying down.

One last ride for G'veive and Hens. A firetruck that went pretty high up in the air.  I don't know why a firetruck would be doing that but they had a blast even though it was pretty scary at first.

A group photo without too many lurkers
It's hard to get a shot of a group in a busy public place but we managed to get one before we headed back to the MAX platform where we found...

A Benson Bubbler
If you don't know the story of these lovely water fountains that are place around the city you can look at this http://www.uniquely-portland-oregon.com/benson-bubblers.html website. They are pretty to look at and Portland's water is very refreshing.

Heading back on the MAX

Wasn't it a nice looking evening? The blue skies with big puffy clouds.  I'm so glad we made the effort to get down there when we did. We've had nothing but rain since then.
Henry wanted to keep switching seats to get to sit next to each of us.

Part of the adventure was that the MAX was taken out of service at 7th avenue so we walked the last 5 blocks to the van.
We got to see the fountain at Holiday Park up close on the way back.  I don't think Henry has ever been there.  One of these warm summer days he'll have to come back and run in the water with the cousins.

Of course I had to stop and take a final picture of these silvery pink hydrangeas. I do love flowers!

Rose Festival has wonderful opportunities for family fun.
